Cultivation: Squashes are extremely vigorous growers and trailing varieties need a lot of room. There are some bush varieties available that are suited to smaller spaces.  Winter squashes are grown for storage. They need a rich fertile free draining soil, well manured or composted in a sheltered site as they dislike cold winds.

Pests & Diseases:  Young plants need protection from slugs and snails and some plants may not set fruit in cold summers.
